Playing Catch Up and the Not-So-Green Monster Smoothie Recipe

February 28, 2012 in Food,Parenthood,Photos,Savings

Hi friends! I think we need to play a little catch up, don’t you?

Here we go!

1. Are you in to Downtown Abbey? I started watching it a few weeks ago and have finally finished season one. At first, I didn’t think I was sophisticated and cool enough to “get it,” but after the third episode, I was hooked. The show makes me want to write in cursive, sit up straight and take tea. I heart Mr. Bates!

2. Speaking of TV, Jake and I have decided to cancel our satellite subscription and have moved on to streaming tv shows and movies through Roku. Since we rarely have time to just veg out and watch TV, I think it’s a good fit for us. I like it, but it’s going to be an adjustment. Most importantly, it’s going to save us a ton of money!

3. My best friend, Melissa, has started writing a blog! She’s a great writer and has a great story to tell, so check it out! (www.whenlovecame.blogspot.com)

4. On Saturday, our photo disc from {two}chics arrived in the mail. You might remember that a few weeks ago Jessica with {two}chics wrote a guest post about how to take great pictures of kids. (Missed it? Check it out here.) Here are a few of my favorites from the shoot:

6. I’m so excited about my first giveaway that’s coming up! I hope you come back to check it out!

7. Owen has decided to become an, ahem, selective eater over the past few weeks, and instead of force feeding him, I am now going to sneak vegetables in to his diet any way I know how. Brandy at Mannly Mama does a great Toddler Dinner segment on her blog, and I’ve gotten a lot of tips from her, but since she has an older toddler, Owen isn’t quite ready for some of her tried and true methods. Enter the Green Monster Smoothie.

I found the recipe on Pinterest, but didn’t follow it to a T, which is probably why Owen’s smoothie turned out blue instead of green. Anyway, you basically just blend up some fruit, yogurt, milk and spinach. (Melissa and I decided that you could add in carrots, too, since they’re kinda sweet, so I’m going to try that today.

Here’s the very unofficial recipe for the smoothie I made for Owen on Sunday:

Owen’s Not So Green Monster Smoothie

Half a frozen banana (chopped)
Three frozen strawberries (chopped)
A handful of frozen blueberries
A handful of baby spinach leaves
A splash of whole, organic milk
A small container of greek yogurt

Blend until smooth (hence the name “smoothie”) and enjoy!

Here’s a few lessons I learned, since I didn’t follow the recipe exactly.

1. It’s better to freeze the fruit you want to use so that you don’t have to include a lot of ice. I didn’t use any ice and it came out great.

2. BUT chop the fruit before you freeze it, or you’ll have a major traffic jam in your blender, which will result in you having to remove huge chunks of fruit and chop them anyway. So, better to do it before you have a huge mess on your hands. (Ha! Get it?) I know it’s probably the obvious thing to do, but I didn’t, so I’m sure someone else out there is as inept with a blender as me, right? I sure do hope so.

I plan to do this for Owen about twice a week. He loves it, it’s fun to make and it’s a great way to incorporate some much needed vegetables into his diet.

Do you have a good smoothie recipe to share? I think I’m going to start snacking with smoothies, too, so I’d love a new recipe!

All for now! Happy Tuesday!

OMG! LOVE Downton Abbey!!! And of course Mr. Bates. And that Thomas what a scoundrel and I am totally Mary & Matthew 4EVA!!!!! LOL We chucked the cable about a year ago, and it has been great. We honestly only miss watching “How I Met your Mother” because CBS isn’t apart of Hulu or Netflix, but other than that it has been great. Soooo much cheaper! As for the picky eater, we are starting to have one of those too! I haven’t tried a smoothie on her yet, but I did sneak some spinach leaves into her scrambled eggs and grilled cheese sandwich! Worked like a charm!!!

I did try the spinach in the grilled cheese trick with him a few weeks ago, but I think I’ll need to cut it up into smaller pieces next time. I haven’t tried it with eggs, but he’s not really into them either. Hopefully he will be soon, though! Eggs are super easy!

Matthew+Mary!

So much to say about this post…

1. I heart Downtown Abby and just love Mr. Bates too! Season 2 just ended and is just as addicting… get ready.

2. Love the new pictures, especially the upside down Owen. I also love that Jake appears to be holding him with one hand and you are using too… looks like you love your child just a bit more. Ha!

3. Smoothies – god bless ‘em. I’m on a smoothie kick too. I’ve found adding a bit of peanut butter in a fruit smoothie (especially anything with banana) not only makes it taste good but also keeps you full longer.

1) Since DA isn’t offered on Hulu Plus OR Amazon Prime, I’ll be watching season 2 on my iPad. (So far, Roku is proving to be a nuisance!) I’m excited to see what happens, though!

2) Thanks! As for the hand positioning – someone’s got to play it safe!

3) Peanut butter = great idea! Owen LOVES peanut butter.

I also love Downton Abbey!! I’m all caught up except for the season finale of Season 2. I got into Downton Abbey last year when they talked about it on NPR’s Culturetopia podcast and have been trying to get people to watch it since then. I’m so glad everyone else is hooked now too! If you haven’t you should also check out the BBC/PBS mini series Sherlock. It’s Sherlock Holmes set in modern times (Holmes is a Gulf War vet). Really good stuff.

As for the smoothies, my parents are big into smoothie making lately. If you’re going to stick with it, you might want to invest in one of those crazy industrial strength blenders. I think they have a Vitamix. They literally throw heads of lettuce in there and let the thing go to work. It’s crazy, but effective.

Cassie – thanks for the SH tip! I’ll check it out when I’m all caught up with DA!

Re: smoothies: I’ll look into the heavy duty blender. Right now I’m using an immersion blender that M. Strunk gave me. It seems to do the trick, but if we add more heavy duty veggies like raw carrots I’m sure a better blender will come in handy!

Also, did you change your blog URL? I just went back and reviewed some of your posts! Excited to catch up!!

I did start up a new blog. I was going to post it for you when I got around to answering your survey from the other day. You’ll have to share your secret of how you keep the posts rolling out (with pictures). I just can’t stay on top of what I want to write about.

PS We watched the last episode of Season 2 of Dowton Abbey tonight and I noticed that the PBS site says you only have 6 more days to watch and then they’re pulling them down!!!

I can’t wait to check it all out, Cassie! I hope to have some down time tonight and will definitely add your blog to my reading list!

When I saw this comment this morning (I’m just now able to respond) I immediately freaked out and started rearranging my schedule so that I could make sure to watch all of the episodes before they take them off the app! I hope I can finish them! Maybe PBS will do a DA marathon?

1. I don’t know what downtown abbeys even is.
2. I LOVE your pictures. Why hasn’t anyone commented on the ultrasound that Owen is holding? Is there a #2 on the way or are those his pics? (true story- I only look at the pictures on your blog. Too much reading at work to read at home too so you may have announced something and I don’t know.)
3. I don’t own a blender so I’m no help with smoothies.

1. Lauren, you’re saving lives. I doubt you have time for TV! ;)
2. Thanks! No, no bun in the oven. Owen is looking at his own sonogram photos, but I can see how it would be misleading!
3. I bet you’d make good use of a blender – both smoothies AND frozen drinks. Just sayin’!

Haha, I thought the same thing as LR with the ultrasound picture, until I saw your caption on Facebook! But then I remembered your blog about thinking you were pregnant but not, and figured it was him and not a new little one. ;)

I saw the recipe for the Green Monster smoothie online, glad to see Owen liked it. Did you try it? I have a friend that made one and loved it. I’m not as adventurous, so I’ve been hesitant to make one myself!

There is DEFINITELY not another Dickson on its way! That’s for sure! As for the smoothie, I did try it. I’m not big on bananas (they actually make me gag a little) but I barely tasted them. I don’t believe I put enough spinach in this batch, so next time I’m going to try to include more. Like I said, the first one came out blue instead of green. I have a feeling if I double the spinach I’ll get a different result.

You can also catch Season 2 Downton episodes on the PBS website… I caught up on several there since they aren’t on Netflix.

I’ve tried that before. I have the PBS app on my iPad, so I like being able to watch it anywhere. =)
